Our 3 Step Music Video Production Process

1. Pre-Production

Idea Generation

Initial meeting

During our initial meeting, the key points we will discuss are:

  • Expectations of the shoot
  • Style of video you have in mind
  • Going over what we do, and proposal to you
  • The budget for your music video production
  • Expected timeline
  • Answering any of your other question

During this meeting, our aim is to understand the vibe of your song, along with your own interpretation of it. We also make it a priority to understand you, your personality, and the way you wish to present yourself in the music video. Once we have heard the song and agreed on the the type of visuals you want for your music video, we will then look for inspirations, or have you present any inspirations that you may have of your own. This gives us a good framework that we can work off.

Example: One of our first clients, Satvik. We identified that he has a down to earth, yet firm personality. After listening to his music, we identified that it is a rap song with a chill beat, along with a sharp enunciation of words. We keep this in mind when doing research on music videos that sound similar to this. This helps us come to an agreement quicker on the type of shots for the music video, and additional things such as props, extras, locations, and editing style.

Subsequent Meetings

During our second meeting, we will present to you our storyboards according to what was discussing during the first meeting. We want to iron out the details of key shots, hence our storyboards we present often include us doing mock ups of the shots, with the goal of giving you a clear visual image of the final music video. We will also be presenting to you all of the logistics necessary for our music video, such as:

  • Locations
  • Equipments
  • Number of extras
  • Dates for the shoot
  • Where we are allocating the budget with a breakdown of our projected expenses

Throughout this process, we will also be providing you with constant updates on our progress leading up to the shoot dates. With all our pre-production needs met, we are ready to proceed to the shooting phase!

2. Production

Video Production

During our filming process, we like to tackle the hardest shots first. These are shots which involve the highest amounts of coordination, timing, extras, equipment etc. These shots are often referred to as "money shots", because these are what will be the most stand out moments in any video. These shots usually tend to be the opening or closing shot of the music video, or during a stand out moment during the chorus. By doing these first, we allocate the most fresh brain power and time to making sure we perfectly nail these shots.

We practice the habit of having at least 2 takes of any scene/shot, because having a back up when you need it will be a lifesaver. We also encourage you to be very involved and hands on with your video, so whenever we finish a take we will watch the footage back together and make adjustments if necessary for another take. We also want to leave room for improvisation during the shoot itself. We would stick to the storyboards and shotlist initially as discussed with you, but moments of inspiration can strike at any time and we are always open to improvising on set and being creative.

3. Post-Production

Video Editing

During the editing process, you are always welcomed to check in on progress and be as hands on as you'd like with the editing. Most of the hard work should be done during the pre-production phase with our planning and storyboards, but if there are things that you would like adjusted while we are editing we will be happy to do so for you.

Much like with our filming process, we will initially stick to the storyboards and stitch together the music video to ensure it flows naturally. Any stylisation of the video will come afterwards, these can include:

  • Fancy video transition
  • Visual effects
  • Graphics

Once everything has been put together, we are done and you have your completed music video!

Create Your Music Video With Us!

Music video production holds a special place in our hearts as they were the first videography projects we did at XI Productions. Music videos are among the most viral and rewatchable forms of media, and our goal is to compliment your music with a captivating visual experience for your audience.

Hear from Xavier: " What I've learnt through our music video projects is the need to be sensitive and understand how genre, tempo, and vibe play a factor in the type of shots and editing style we take to creating a music video. For example, if I were to film for an influencer girl with an acoustic song, jazz related. My main priority is to choose shots that flatter the artist, and avoid all shots that reveal any potential faults that they may have, so a high angle shot would typically be a no go as it tends to make the artist appear shorter than they are. I would also want to hold on to our shots for longer and slow the pace of edits, to match with the slow tempo of an acoustic song. I would also light the scenes in a low-key and subtle way, and depending on the emotion of the lyrics, increase the intensity of our lights, subject to the artist's preference."

Focus on your music, and let us handle the video!

Frequently Asked Questions

On average, it would take about 2-3 meetings with our clients/artiste to plan the video and arrange all the necessary logistics during pre-production. The overall duration will vary heavily depending on the props they want, to artistic decisions, and required crew. After these meetings, we will research on how to achieve the intended video through showing video examples, having test shots and effects as example for what the client wants, or even assisting with casting. These phrases can span up to about 1-2 weeks, depending on each other’s schedules.

During production, for, let’s say, a 3-minute video, would usually take 2-3 shoot days. Shoot days can vary from back-to-back shoot days, or alternating ones. Usually, back-to-back shoot days are more ideal to suit rentals needs such as equipment or location or both, which can save trouble for traveling, planning, and costs.

During post production, usually piecing together and editing a rough cut would take

about 2 days, and then one day for offline cut, and then online cut. In total, how long 1 video would take is about 1 week to edit.

With all these in mind, the process can last anywhere between 2 weeks to multiple months, depending on how complex and long the music video is.

We will give our inputs as and when necessary, but ultimately, it is the client’s decisions that will be final. We understand that some clients may come forward to us with a clear idea in mind for what type of video they want, but just need help with the execution, whereas others may have a less clear image of what they what in mind which will require more input from us. We will calibrate depending on our clients. In some cases, we can even go as far as to discuss the artist’s choreography and acting. These considerations will not only make the client more sure of how the final video will turn out like, but also give us a clear idea on the production, such as equipment, length of shoot, and rental.

It depends what changes has to be made. For editing, changes can be made easier, as re-editing it requires us to go back into the editing platform and just make the necessary changes (i.e. changing captions, transitions, music, etc). We will be happy to make these small adjustments. Our common practice is to keep our video product and editing project file for at least 2 months before deleting them for safety. Anything after 2 months cannot be changed and is final.

However, any changes that have to be made with filming will be harder (i.e. reshooting a scene, changing locations, changing casts, etc). If these changes are made halfway during post-productions and if these are just simple pick up shots, it can still be done. However, once the final product has been done, unlike the first scenario on post-production changes, it will be a lot harder to reshoot and even re-edit the changed scenes. We will have to charge minimally $500 for the changes to be made.
