Our 3 Step Music Video Production Process
1. Pre-Production
Pre-meeting research
Every sport has its own set of rules, intensity, and culture. We want to have a firm understanding of the community behind the sport: its memes, its quirks, unspoken rules, etc. before going into a meeting with you.
Initial Meeting
Our clients may not necessarily always be the athlete themselves, video projects could be planned by agents for their athletes clients. If the client happens to be the agent, there might not be many opportunities to get to know the athlete in mind, so the above research process has to be done in more depth to understand the sport. Agents generally have a very clear idea of what they want in a video, so the agendas for the meeting will be very clear, and we will usually be able to understand the video idea quickly. Still, we will always present our ideas as clearly as possible so that the agent will be able to see if our initial idea is what they were envisioning.
If the client happens to be the athlete, we would then spend the time to know the athlete, their vibes, what they are looking for, and the process and steps to make the video, explained thoroughly and coherently for the athlete. This also presents the opportunity to ask the athlete more about the sports quirks, so as to adhere to the community’s rules and taboos of the sport. We then find inspiration to agree with the creative and logistical angle that we can take.
The pre-production process will vary depending on whether we are shooting the athlete in a live environment where they are playing the sport or during training, or whether it is a scripted shoot. If it is a live environment, the pre-production would be complete very quickly as we would take an event style approach to the filming day, trying to get as much coverage as possible in good angles. While a planned shoot would require us to draft up our storyboards and shortlist to be presented in subsequent meetings.
Once all the pre-production needs are met, such as the shot list, equipment list, casting call (if necessary), and budget, we will proceed to our videography!
2. Production
Videography
The videography would vary again as well depending on the type of shoot we are having.
A planned and scripted shoot would lead us to following our process for all our other shoots, tackling all the hardest shots first, doing multiple takes and letting you check the footage and adjust what needs to be adjusted, especially since this is a physical activity that might need multiple tries to get perfect.
A shoot in a live environment on the other hand would be a completely difference process. We will arrive with a rough guide of the type of shots and angles we want to capture, but most of the time we would just be trying to follow your movements to capture all of your gameplay. Coverage is of utmost importance to us as you could make an insane play at anytime and we want to make sure to capture those key moments.
3. Post-Production
Video Editing
During the editing process, you are always welcomed to check in on progress and be as hands on as you'd like with the editing.
For a planned video, most of the hard work should have been done during the pre-production phase and the process should be straightforward.
For a live environment video, we welcome you to watch the footage back together with us too as you may feel like there are standout moments for yourself that we missed when reviewing the footage. We hope to leave you with a nice highlight reel at the end of all this!

Create Your Sports Video With Us!
The 2 of us, Isaac and Xavier are very familiar with sports, being sportsmen ourselves. We understand the passion, discipline, and glory sports can bring, and this makes us excited to work with Sportsperson alike. Every athlete is unique in their own ways, and deserves a form of expression as their identity as an athlete, and we would be honoured to be the ones to do so.
The pressure about making content as an athlete is that they are athletes, not actors. While performing in front of thousands on live TV may not be an issue for high profile athletes, it can be a very different ball game when getting interviewed. Some describe it like a gun being pointed to their face! Being aware of the camera while filming a video project for athletes, whether it is a commercial video, or an interview, could make them self conscious, as they may suddenly feel awkward about being filmed. We want to try out best to allow athletes to express themselves in our videos and give as little direction as possible.
Athletes all know and love the feeling of “being in the zone”, a state of hyperfocus that athletes go into that unlocks their maximum potential, having an unwavering state-of-mind. While videography does not need to be as intense, we understand the feeling of being in the zone, and by enabling the hyper focus in the acting aspect, we aim to reduce camera shyness for athletes.
Frequently Asked Questions
On average, it would take about 2-3 meetings with our clients/artiste to plan the video and arrange all the necessary logistics during pre-production. The overall duration will vary heavily depending on the props they want, to artistic decisions, and required crew. After these meetings, we will research on how to achieve the intended video through showing video examples, having test shots and effects as example for what the client wants, or even assisting with casting. These phrases can span up to about 1-2 weeks, depending on each other’s schedules.
During production, for, let’s say, a 3-minute video, would usually take 2-3 shoot days. Shoot days can vary from back-to-back shoot days, or alternating ones. Usually, back-to-back shoot days are more ideal to suit rentals needs such as equipment or location or both, which can save trouble for traveling, planning, and costs.
During post production, usually piecing together and editing a rough cut would take
about 2 days, and then one day for offline cut, and then online cut. In total, how long 1 video would take is about 1 week to edit.
With all these in mind, the process can last anywhere between 2 weeks to multiple months, depending on how complex and long the sports video is.
This is meant for people doing the sport in question. This can also be linked to product/marketing videography too. As long as there is purpose in the video to be made, we welcome any sportsperson of any skill level.
In the interest of self-protection, we would need to evaluate on a case by case basis regarding the risk to our equipment and safety. Of course it is still possible to film any type of sports, but our preparation costs and time will depend on our familiarity with the sport, and the risk factors involved in filming it.
XI Productions do account for safety equipment needed as first aid.
However, do note the following:
1. XI Productions are not accountable for the injuries that occur due to stunts being pulled (Unless it is related to our equipment causing injury).
2. XI Productions are not First-aid trained.
It depends what changes has to be made. For editing, changes can be made easier, as re-editing it requires us to go back into the editing platform and just make the necessary changes (i.e. changing captions, transitions, music, etc). We will be happy to make these small adjustments. Our common practice is to keep our video product and editing project file for at least 2 months before deleting them for safety. Anything after 2 months cannot be changed and is final.
However, any changes that have to be made with filming will be harder (i.e. reshooting a scene, changing locations, changing casts, etc). If these changes are made halfway during post-productions and if these are just simple pick up shots, it can still be done. However, once the final product has been done, unlike the first scenario on post-production changes, it will be a lot harder to reshoot and even re-edit the changed scenes. We will have to charge minimally $500 for the changes to be made.
